Reading Workshop

Ok, I know this is not math, but I am starting to get the hang of this Flip Video camera and today made a short video of us while we were doing our Reading Workshop. I thought is turned out so cute that I just had to share. The video wasn't uploading so I included a link. I hope it works! Enjoy!

Math Sneek Peek

I just bought a new Flip camera to use at school and I am starting to learn how to use it. This week instead of just explaining what we are learning about in math, I am hoping to SHOW you what we have done. It is a little shaky, and its not the best but I hope you enjoy this very quick sneek peek of some of  the great math learning that has been happening in our classroom!

Skip Counting

Picture
Wait..don't skip counting! I'm talking about counting by numbers other than 1. With the 50th day of school here and gone, we have been learning how to count up to higher numbers different ways. This week our focus have been counting by 10's which the kids are really enjoying. We made a 10's turkey you may have seen him come home. We have also sang some songs and looked for the pattern on the hundreds grid. This week ask your child to count to 100 by 10's and watch the video's below.

Patterns

Picture
Patterns are all around us! The children have started to easily identify AB patterns (red, blue, red, blue, red, blue) and we are working on adding more complex patterns to their daily practice. Have you noticed that there are patterns in many children's stories and songs too? We have! When we read books or sing songs or recite poems we try to identify patterns. While you are shopping, driving, singing, reading or writing together see if you can identify or create patterns.

Here is a link to a fun link to a song that we are currently singing in class. It is not a "Math" song but it is a pattern- enjoy!!

Graphing

We have been working on graphing in class. Every morning we graph the weather for the day and each child has their own graph that they add to in their math journal, ask your child to tell you about October's graph.

In class we also graph things like our favorite food, color and shape. Graphing is an important skill and most of the children understand basic bar graphs easily since it is so visual. Often they comment on which item "wins" or has the most in the graph, we are still working on the full understanding of why and how we can use them. So if you see a graph make sure to point it out to your child and talk about it. With elections there are sure to be some on every news station for the next few days.

Below are 2 new videos. This first one is a link to a lesson that you can watch on youtube and then do at home with your child.

This second video, also from youtube is one for your child to watch about graphing

Its Number Writing Week!

Thank you so much for visiting. While you are here don't forget to take the poll on the left, and with your child check out some of the videos that we have been singing in the classroom down below.

This week we have really been focusing on number writing and it is really coming along. Recently the children brought home a pumpkin number book that had some cute rhymes and poems to help them form numbers. I have seen a lot of backward numbers which is typical for this time of the year but keep reminding your child to form the numbers the correct way. Teen numbers are next and that is tricky. Click the link to watch the teen numbers video.
